When it comes to painting there really is no standard pricing. Each painter prices according to their own method - sometimes informed by experience and knowledge, and sometimes not. You will undoubtedly see a wide range between estimates.

The first thing you can do is figure out the cost of the paint. A typical room (12' x 14') will use 2-3 gallons of paint for the walls and ceiling. Add a gallon if it needs primer. This means the paint for your room will cost between $80 and $200 depending on the paint you want to use (top quality paints will range between $40 and $60 per gallon.

The labor rates will vary widely around the country, but typically painters will charge by the day - $200 to $400 per day is common in the Northeast. A typical room will probably take 2 days. One day for setup, preparation and priming. And then the second day for two coats of paint and clean up. So that means painting a typical room will cost between $500 and $1,000. If you are thinking of hiring a painter, there at least a few things to keep in mind when doing so. Many people don't understand the difference between a good paint job and a not-so-good paint job, and you don't want to learn the hard way. Here are a few tips to keep in mind when choosing a painter:

1) All painters are not equal.
2) Check 3 to 5 references.
3) Ask for a painter recommendation at your local paint store
4) Beware of the switch to low-end paint.
5) Buy the paint yourself.
6) Just because your friend had a good experience, doesn't mean the painter is good.

Evaluate a Painter's Estimate

Attention: open in a new window. PDFPrintE-mail

How detailed is the estimate? Is is based on time and materials? Or is it one price? Does the estimate break down the work by the various rooms to be painted and the necessary preparation? Or does it not provide any detail?

In order to evaluate an estimate, you need enough detail to really understand the work that you are paying for. On the one hand, you can pay a painter to paint your room where they'll simply throw a coat of cheap paint on the wall. And on the other hand, you can pay a painter to wash your walls, fill in and smooth any surface imperfections, use primer, fill and smooth any remaining imperfections, screw down anything loose, caulk cracks and trim, tape and drape plastic and drop cloths to ensure your floors and other surfaces are protected, and paint using the finest quality paint and painting tools. On the surface, these two painting jobs may not look all that different. But as you look a little closer, and over time, you will see a huge difference. In short, you get what you pay for.

So ask for details and understand what you are paying for, and you will get a sense for the difference. Also check references to get a sense of the painter's work and reputation.
