Choosing Exterior Colors
Choosing exterior paint colors is the hardest design task of all. First, colors look really different on such a huge area, it is a major expense in terms of paint and labor purchased/expended, and it is a very visible stamp on your neighborhood - so people want to get the color right. Here are some good tips to help you find your exterior paint color.
Get some suggestions from your exterior house painter. They see the finished product of their work all the time, so ask them for paint color suggestions.
Visit your local paint store. The professionals there have a great deal of experience in helping people with their exterior painting projects, so ask and they'll be happy to help. They also have paint color charts and books that show pictures and color combinations.
Drive around and look at what colors other people have used to paint their houses. When you see a house painted with a color scheme you lik,e go up to the door and ask the colors they used. Most people are more than happy to share this information - it is flattering (especially since they probably did exactly what you are doing, too).
Look at Design and Home & Garden magazines. They are typically filled with pictures and can serve as an inspiration. There are also some great books available. Some paint manufacturers offer books. For example, Benjamin Moore offers a book called "Benjamin Moore™ Exterior Style - Inspiring Color Ideas and Expert Painting Advice".
