Help, My Painter is Coming to Paint Tomorrow and I Don't Have Colors Yet!
You are in a huge dilemma if your painting contractor is coming tomorrow and you don’t have paint colors picked out yet. If this is you, it is most likely that you are either a procrastinator or your house painter had an opening in his schedule and can squeeze you in last minute. Either way, you are probably going crazy with color charts and paint swatches trying to figure out which color will go with the décor of the room. But, really, how can you pick the right paint color under such pressure and stress? You might as well just close your eyes, point and go with whatever color your finger lands on.

The last thing you should do is rush through the color choice process. If you are unable to come up with a color by the night before the job is to be started, then you might as well put the job on hold for a day or two, until you can get it figured out. Here are a couple pointers that might help you.
1. Pick Colors from the Design Elements of the Room. A great way to come up with a good wall color is to take a look around the room and observe what the 3 main colors are. Pick the color that is not as prominent. For instance if you have a couch that is mainly brown and beige, but has some olive green detailing. You may want to choose a shade of the green as your wall color. Or if you have an area rug that is mostly cream and burgundy with a touch of gold – try picking up that color on the walls to tie the room together. Color can bring balance. You probably don’t want to introduce a totally new color into the space if there are already several colors there already. From a design outlook, you should really only use three to four colors in one room.
2. Get Color Inspiration from your Wardrobe. If you are starting from scratch in a room and you have to come up with a whole new color scheme, then why not look inside your closet? There are certain colors that we tend to gravitate towards and we wind up buying our clothes in those specific colors. So, think about the colors that you like to wear and then open your color chart and pick out a few based on the colors of your favorite outfits. If you like to wear it, then most likely you will not mind living with it on your walls as well.
3. Research Ideas through Books, Magazines, and the Internet. You can find so many ideas for color inspiration through pictures. Have you been to your local book store lately? Have you seen the number of magazines available on the subject of home and decorating? You can even look up ideas on the internet. And having a picture that you can refer to, while picking colors out of your color chart, will really help.
4. Ask for Help. Ask a friend or family member for their opinion. But keep in mind that you may not always agree. But they just might have the assurance that you need to make a final decision. When all else fails, seek the advice of a professional. A color consultant can very easily pin point the right colors for the room according to your style and décor. You probably will not be able to get them in on such short notice, so you will need to try and plan ahead.
So, if your painter is starting the job tomorrow and you don’t have colors picked out just yet, don’t stress yourself out. Follow these simple steps: pick colors from the design elements of the room, get color inspiration from your wardrobe, research ideas through books, magazines, internet, and never be afraid to ask for help in friends, family or even a professional.
