As the seasons pass and the weather changes from hot to cold there are going to be many changes going on with your house. The obvious change is in the temperature, when the weather turns from hot to cold the wood around the windows and doors will shrink causing a problem that was not apparent before. The opposite happens from cold to hot weather, the wood expands and this expanding causes the wood to crack. Caulk acts as a flexible barrier and moves with the wood in any weather helping you save on energy costs.

When you see these gaps it is important to make sure that you fill them as soon as possible. As an example, if you see a gap between a window pane the window in an old house this means you are losing heat through that crack in the winter. In the summer cold air escapes and this will increase your energy bills substantially.

The Importance of Using Caulk
Caulk serves many purposes for both interior and exterior projects. It can:

Seals cracks that are letting cool air out in the summer and cold air out in the winter. By sealing them you make your house more energy efficient.

There are materials around your house that expand and contract and you never know when they are going to do this because it happens at different rates of speed. They also will do this at different temperatures. If you use a flexible caulk it can seal the cracks that happened when things moved.

  • It is a sealant so it will provide a barrier to moisture and make sure that water doesn't get into certain areas. This keeps the area from rot and from expansion if water comes near it and freezes.
  • Insects, such as ants and termites, can't get into your home if there are no cracks for them to crawl through. Caulk can seal these types of cracks.
  • It can add a nice finish to areas where you have corners and joints that are not the same.

There are many ways to use caulk and it is important to use it correctly. Here are tips to do the best caulking job:

It is important to realize before you start caulking that you will need a little practice to get it to be perfect. Try caulking some spare sheetrock or an extra 2x4 just to get the hang of using the gun. Be careful to not squeeze very tightly as the caulk tends to come out faster then you would expect.

You should also have the right tools for the job. In addition to the caulk you will need a caulking gun as well as a putty knife, wet rag and a caulking tool which is used to smooth out the caulk into corners after it has been applied. These tools will help to make the job go faster and also help you maintain a neat work area.
