Many people think of primer as a prequel to the actual painting but primer is actually a very essential part of the painting process as any professional painter will tell you. Not only does primer make surfaces paintable but it also decreases the amount of top coats necessary to cover the surface being painted. Just one coat of primer can save you from having to recoat 3 or 4 times.

Primers will save you money in the long run and studies have shown that when you combine a coat of tinted primer and then a coat of topcoat you have a better looking finish. Also your paint job will last longer and be more durable.

Primers are meant to create a solid foundation for the paint you are going to use. As an example, Benjamin Moore Fresh Start Acrylic primer is a very high quality primer and it has a richer resin than regular paint. This means that it will stick to a surface better so that it creates a firm foundation for the final coat of paint.

Primer is most commonly used on both interior and exterior wood siding, drywall, over a glossy paint or surface, tile, Formica, smoke and water stains and any other surface that can be painted. Oil based primers are most commonly used for covering wallpaper adhesive or other chemicals which may bleed through latex paint. If you are removing wallpaper it is always a good idea to prime the area which the wallpaper was removed from with an oil based primer before doing any painting. Also areas which were previously painted with oil based paint should always be sanded and primed with an oil based primer before painting with latex paint. This process will avoid any chance of hindering coverage and will ensure an even top coat.

Primer is an excellent base for your paint because it is made to stop problems that you could have with paint like peeling, blistering or cracking so the paint that you apply will be more durable for a longer period time.

Since most primers start out as white you can easily tint it with just a little colorant and it will help you do a much better job within the paint job. Imagine saving the time and energy that it would normally take. The good news is that you don't have to be a professional painter in order to have this done and make it work for you.

The alternative to priming is using the new, eco-friendly Aura paint. The Aura paint comes with a built in primer and is guarantied to cover most surfaces in two coats. Besides the better coverage the Aura boasts a faster drying time, less smell, better durability and a more vibrant finish. If you are starting a painting project from scratch the Aura will save you money and make the project easier.  Check your local Benjamin Moore paint stores for availability.

When you are not sure about whether you want to paint your home on your own you can always chose a professional painter. They are used to doing the type of work you require and they will help you move forward with your project.
